📖 Quick Glossary

Ionosphere — A region of Earth’s upper atmosphere ionized by solar radiation that affects radio propagation and satellite communication. Geomagnetic storm — A disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field driven by solar wind or coronal mass ejection activity. Kp index — A global geomagnetic activity index used to describe the strength of disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field. F-layer — The upper ionospheric layer, especially important for long-distance HF radio propagation through reflection and refraction. Electron flux — The number of energetic electrons passing through a unit area; high levels can affect satellites and communications systems. Radio blackout — Loss or degradation of HF radio communication caused by enhanced ionization from solar flares. Coronal hole high-speed stream — Fast solar wind escaping from open magnetic-field regions on the Sun, often causing recurrent geomagnetic activity. Geomagnetic storm watch — An advance alert that conditions may become strong enough to cause a geomagnetic storm.
